Title: Multiobjective routing in multiservice MPLS networks with path protection – A network-wide optimization approach*

Coordinator: Rita Girão Silva

Dates start/end: September 2013/November 2014

Entity: PT Inovação

Synopsis: A multiobjective routing model for Multiprotocol Label Switching networks with multiple service types and path protection is studied. The routing problem is formulated in a network-wide optimization sense. The considered objectives in the biobjective integer program are the minimization of the bandwidth routing cost and the minimization of the load cost in the network links. A link-path formulation is proposed for the problem and an exact method (in this context) is applied for solving the formulated problem. An extensive experimental study, with results on network performance measures in various randomly generated networks, is performed.

*The original title of the project was “Multiobjective routing in MPLS networks with traffic splitting and multiple services”, but a redefinition of the goal of the project led to a redefinition of the title.

This includes the development of algorithms for computing end-to-end paths with and without protection. In the case of the computation of end-to-end paths with protection it must be computed, for each connection, a maximally node disjoint path pair.

Title: Optimization in Networks with Traffic Engineering Technologies

Coordinator: Lúcia Martins

Dates start/end: March 2010 / March 2011

Entity: PT Inovação

Synopsis: The versatility and efficiency of the algorithms developed in a previous project (Optimization in Carrier Ethernet Networks) have shown that they can be applied in the resolution of some performance problems of the algorithms that are in use at OSS PTIN. The applicability of these algorithms may be relevant for some service provision tools. On the other hand the appearance of a new line of NetBand products based on MPLS-TP leads to considering that the paths computation algorithms are going to be in use for a long time. The new services such as E-TREE and E-LAN lead also to new challenges in terms of the computation of these new types of connections. The teletraffic engineering issues in networks with PBB-TE (Provider Backbone Bridge Traffic Engineering) technology and more recently with MPLS –TP has been the target for new developments. In these networks active and backup paths can be computed in order to optimize one or several metrics (in a multiple criteria approach). Among those metrics that may be used as objective functions or restrictions in the path optimization problem are: the hop count, the load cost, the delay and the reliability.

In this project, algorithms to compute point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint connections were developed in a single and multiple criteria approach. This multiple criteria approach was shown to be advantageous when network global performance were optimized and multiple and important conflicting QoS metrics were under evaluation.

Entity: EDP Distribuição

Synopsis: This project, in partnership with INESC Porto, consists of annually carrying out work in specialized consultancy with a view to determine the load profiles (MAT, AT, MT, BTE, BTN and IP) and determine de predicted the reference load diagram of the global network, as well as, carrying out studies to the updating the losses profiles of the network (MAT, AT, MT e BT).

Title: Multicriteria routing in WDM networks

Coordinator: Teresa Gomes

Dates start/end: March 2006 / March 2007

Entity: PT Inovação

Synopsis: A bi-criteria routing model for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks was proposed. First the problems to be tackled were identified and then the bi-criteria model was developed. A description of the study network was made in collaboration with PT Inovação. A bi-criteria routing model was developed which took into account the specificities of the defined network. An algorithm for calculating and selecting solutions for the proposed bi-criteria model, including a method for selecting wavelengths, were developed. The applicability of the model was studied in a test network, provided by PT-Inovação. Performance measures were obtained using incremental traffic and considering bidirectional and/or unidirectional requests.
